Gary James Spies (February 21, 1942 – January 11, 2025) was a lifelong resident, prominent business owner, and dedicated civic leader in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. Over a span of more than 50 years, he earned a reputation as a “local legend” for his enthusiastic promotion of the community and his extensive philanthropic work.

Business & Professional Leadership

  • Service Food Market: In 1976, he took ownership of Service Food Market, continuing his family’s legacy in the local grocery industry. Under his guidance, the business remained a cornerstone of the community.
  • Corporate & Regional Boards: His business acumen extended to several major regional organizations. He served as a director or board member for Otter Tail Corporation, Lake Region Healthcare (and its Foundation), KLN, and the Veden Charitable Trust.

Community Development & Philanthropy

  • Civic Involvement: Spies held leadership and volunteer roles across numerous organizations, including the Fergus Falls Chamber of Commerce, the Salvation Army, and the Fergus Falls Area College Foundation.
  • Major Projects: He was a driving force behind substantial local fundraising campaigns, most notably championing the development of the Community Arena project.
  • Key Honors:
    • Inducted into the 544 Foundation Hall of Fame in 2010.
    • Awarded an Honorary Degree from Fergus Falls Community College.
    • Selected to deliver the prestigious annual Bigwood Lecture in 2023.

Personal Life & Legacy

Born and raised in Fergus Falls, Spies graduated from the local high school in 1960 and married his high school sweetheart, Sharon “Stubby” Ferguson. An avid outdoorsman, he spent his personal time enjoying the regional lakes, particularly Ottertail Lake and East Battle Lake. Following his passing at age 82, he was widely remembered by community leaders and residents for his deep generosity and enduring impact on the region.
