On-Location Pet and Animal Photography Guide
Bringing a professional pet and animal photography session directly to your animal’s familiar environment is the best way to capture their true personality. Whether we are photographing your family dog in your backyard, a cat in their favorite sunny window, or heritage livestock out in the pasture, keeping animals in their comfortable, everyday surroundings makes for a relaxed and beautiful session.
Here is how you can prepare your home, farm, or yard so we can get the absolute best results from our session together.
1. Choose the Right Spaces
Because I travel directly to you for our pet and animal photography sessions, we have the flexibility to use the spaces where your animal feels most secure.
- Outdoor Areas: For dogs and farm animals, a tidy backyard or an open pasture works wonderfully. Take a quick walk around the area ahead of time to clear away any distracting items like bright plastic toys, garden hoses, or tools.
- Indoor Spaces: If we are doing an indoor session for a cat or a senior pet, identify the rooms with the best natural light. Areas near large windows or glass patio doors are ideal for capturing soft, artistic details.
2. Burn Off Just a Little Energy
When a photographer arrives with gear, animals naturally get curious or excited.
- The Routine: Try to keep your animal’s routine as normal as possible on the day of the shoot.
- For Dogs: A short walk or a brief play session about an hour before I arrive can help take the hyper-energetic edge off, making them more willing to settle into comfortable, relaxed poses.
3. Grooming and Fresh Details
A little bit of grooming right before the session goes a long way in high-resolution portraits, especially for close-ups of eyes and expressions.
- Quick Touch-Ups: A simple brushing to smooth down stray coat hairs and a quick wipe to clear any tear stains or debris from their eyes and muzzle is perfect.
- Collars and Tack: For pets, consider if you want them photographed in a clean, favorite collar, or completely natural. For horses or farm livestock, wiping down halters or leads ahead of time ensures the focus stays entirely on the animal’s beauty.
4. Gather Their Favorite Motivators
Even in their own home, animals can get distracted. Having their absolute favorite things within arm’s reach helps keep their attention focused.
- High-Value Treats: Break out the special rewards they don’t get every day—like small pieces of cheese or chicken.
- Familiar Sounds: Keep their favorite squeaky toy, a crinkly bag, or a clicker nearby. I can use these right next to the camera lens to capture those beautifully alert, forward-facing ears and expressive looks.
5. Just Relax and Have Fun
The absolute best part of on-location animal photography is that there is no pressure on your pet to perform.
- Let Them Be Themselves: If your dog wants to lounge on the grass or your cat disappears under a chair for the first ten minutes, that is completely okay.
- Patience is Key: We will take our time, move at your animal’s pace, and follow them around to capture their genuine character in the places they love most.
